10 footballers you didn't know were still playing


The football world has been kind to some, cruel to many. While some make it big, others either fail to live up to their reputation or never really get going. Some players are just a flash in the pan while others fade out.

A second chance comes rarely in this brutal, competitive world. Here we look at some of the players who had promised much and had built a reputation for themselves, but now are distant memories in the mind of football fans. These players are still playing, and some might get that rare second chance.


10. Diego Forlan

A superstar back in 2010 The former Manchester United man won the Europa League with Atletico Madrid, scoring a in the final, and on top of that he had a superb World Cup where he was the joint top-scorer on five goals, helping Uruguay to a fourth-place finish.

The 37-year-old is still very much an active player, with his boyhood club, Peñarol, which he helped them win the Primera División just last season.



9. Didier Zokora

After three years at Tottenham where he pretty much spent his time there on the substitutes’ bench, he then went on to Sevilla and Turkish sides Trabzonspor and Akhisar Belediyespor, The 35-year-old Ivorian now plays for Indian side Pune City.

8. Florent Malouda

Part of the Chelsea side that won the double in 2010 then to to Trabzonspor and FC Metz followed but Malouda, now 36, is currently under contract with the Delhi Dynamos in India

7. Elano

Formerly a Manchester City midfielder before he moved to Galatasaray and then became a leading man for Brazil at the 2010 World Cup, where he netted two goals. The 35-year-old now plays for Brazillian side Santos.

6.Thomas Sorensen

Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen had spells at Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke City. Sorensen is still an active player, The 40-year-old is playing in Australia with Melbourne City.

5. Matthew Upson

The former Arsenal defender had no luck breaking into the Gunners’ starting XI, but eventually found his spot as a Defender for Birmingham City. Then a move to West Ham came in 2007 being named captain two years after his move, Stoke followed a year later, Since then, the 37-year-old has played for Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City, while his latest campaign was with MK Dons where they were relegated from the Championship.

4. Alvaro Recoba

Something of an Inter Milan legend, Alvaro Recoba is a name that hasn’t been heard much for around ten years now, but amazingly he is still playing at the age of 38 with Uruguayan side Nacional.

3.Tim Cahill

A key player for Everton in his eight years at Merseyside, sold to the New York Red Bulls in 2012, The last two years have seen him in China, and his latest move to Melbourne City as a very valuable free agent, at the age of 36.


2. David Trezeguet

Most famous for his goalscoring exploits with Juventus and the French national team, David Trezeguet is still going strong at the age of 37, playing in the Indian Super League with Pune City after recent spells in Argentina with River Plate and Newell’s Old Boys.

1.Eric Djemba-Djemba

The former Manchester United man has played all over the world, in India, Qatar, Denmark, Israel, Scotland and Serbia. Now 35, the midfielder currently plays for Persipa Padalarang in the Indonesian Village Sunday League.
